Invited to Brighton to make new work for the 2010 Brighton Photo Biennale (curated by Martin Parr) Alec arrived at Gatwick airport only to be told he couldn't work in the UK without a visa. I was on the Photoworks board at the time and we fought hard to have the decision overturned, assuming the argument that Alec was unique, and wasn't taking work away from a British artist, would work. But it didn't.
So, instead. his seven-year-old daughter Carmen took the pictures, under the guidance of her father. Like much of Soth’s previous work, Carmen's photographic journey combines poetic and documentary sensibilities, each photograph and idea leading to the next. People, places and objects are woven amongst local newspaper headlines. Serendipity is at play as text and image combine to make uncanny connections and provide a captivating portrait of a city.
