‘Bewohner’ (inhabitants) represents the rural world of the home village of Jitka Hanzlová, an author who questions the conflict between life in the open countryside and the rigid structure of the city.

The artist lightly approaches her subjects – children, peasants and women, landscapes, fields, clothes hanging on strings, smoking ashes and seasons – giving a representation that is both direct and delicate. The images are pervaded by light tones, giving them a suspended and fragile atmosphere, like silent apparitions in which one can catch the signs of the contexts she has captured. Hanzlová observes her subjects with an instinctive gaze that questions the sense of belonging and the meaning of identity, searching for an inner matrix of existence.

There are only 1000 copies for this second edition of the catalogue previously published in 1996, which is now a much sought-after collector’s item.
